TECNIFIBRE BRITISH JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS – Manchester 2010
The Tecnifibre British Junior Championships were held in Manchester between the 28-31 October. This prestigious event has been well established over the years as the biggest domestic junior tournament on the circuit and involves the top British players from all age categories. The National Squash Centre and The Northern Squash Club played host to 320 players for four days of fiercely competitive squash. All qualifying rounds were played at the National Squash Centre on Thursday 28 October which gave 72 players the chance to join the top players in the main draws.
Elin Harlow the Girls Under 13 number 1 seed from Wales was in unstoppable form all weekend, Harlow had not dropped a game going into the final and her opponent Amelia Henley (Kent) could not find enough to stop the trend, Harlow taking the title back to Wales with a 3-0 victory. The Boys Under 13 final was a fantastic game of squash which lasted 52 minutes and had 3 tie breakers. The number 2 seed Robbie Keefe (Hampshire) took on the top seed Harry Falconer (Lincolnshire) and with both boys evenly matched and battling hard it was impossible to call the outcome. Falconer was to be the victor, claiming his first National title with a 12-10 win in the fifth.
The Girls Under 15 final was the only final of the tournament that didn’t involve the top 2 seeds. Lily Taylor (Leicestershire) was the 3/4 seed that knocked out the number 1 seed in the semi finals with a 5 set win in 43 minutes. Taylor came up against the number 2 seed Lucy Beecroft (Northumbria). Beecroft was too strong and clinical and didn’t give anything away, Taylor unable to get in front at any point as Beecroft ran out a comfortable 3-0 winner. The Boys Under 15 final was the complete opposite of the Girls Under 15’s as the top 2 seeds went to war. Hamish Falconer (Lincolnshire) the top seed faced James Evans (Kent) in a final that went past the hour mark. 66 minutes of squash entailed with each player taking a game at a time to send it into the fifth and final game. Evans took the lead and managed to hold on to it to win his first National title, 11-8 the final game score.
The Under 17 category saw both reigning champions return to defend their crowns, Emily Whitlock (Cheshire) returned as top seed in the Girls Under 17’s while Oliver Holland (Nottinghamshire) came back as number 1 in the Boys Under 17’s. Whitlock was untouchable all weekend and punished each of her opponents with clinical attacking shots. Victoria Temple Murray (Devon) was the second seed and former Under 15 Champion who was given the task to end that run. Whitlock however proved to be too strong and quick around the court and retained her title with a 3-0 victory in 20 minutes. Likewise, Holland had rarely been tested in his run to the Boys Under 17 final, Matthew Sidaway (Lancashire) was the number 2 seed and the player with the local hopes on his shoulder and a home advantage, being part of the Manchester Squash Academy who train on the spectacular all glass court at the National Squash Centre. Sidaway could not put that advantage to good use, Holland continuing his impressive form and dominating the game. 3-0 in 40 minutes saw Holland take his title back to Nottingham for the second year running.
The Girls Under 19 final gave another Welsh player the chance to claim a title. Tesni Evans (Wales) the number 2 seed took on Julianne Courtice (Gloucestershire) the top seed and former Under 17 British Champion. Courtice who turns 19 years of age a week after this tournament was keen to end her Junior career on a high and that she did. With the match at 2-1, Courtice came back onto court and played relentlessly, giving Evans no chance as her final game as a junior finished a perfect 11-0 and with it the prestige of winning the Don Sanderson U19 trophy. The Boys Under 19’s top two seeds faced each other as 2nd seed Nathan Lake (Gloucestershire) appeared in his first British Championship final against former Under 17 Champion and number 1 seed Charles Sharpes (Surrey). Sharpes experience along with his class showed as he ran out a comfortable 3-0 winner in 36 minutes as he also adds the Don Sanderson U19 title to his collection.
