STARS OF A NEW AGE CROWNED IN MANCHESTER
This weekend saw 100 of the countries youngest players unite to take part in the very first English Under 11 Championships. The National Squash Centre in Manchester was the perfect stage for the stars of the future as they competed to be named National Champion.
There was a real buzz and a sense of excitement that was ever present throughout the whole weekend. Monrad draws were used which meant a lot of matches for all involved, this didn’t affect the enthusiasm shown by the young juniors at all as they spent the whole weekend switching from playing their competitive matches to having fun practising with the rest of the players on the all glass show court.
In the Girls event, the top 4 seeds made it safely through to the Semi Finals. Top seed Elise Lazarus (Essex) faced 3/4 seed Ellen Cooper (Yorkshire) while fellow 3/4 seed Laura Neill (Northumbria) faced the number 2 Lucy Soulby (Yorkshire). Lazarus was the hot favourite coming into the event as she holds top spot in the U11 and U13 rankings and she looked determined to go all the way, getting to the semi finals without dropping a game or being on court longer than 15 minutes. Cooper gave a valiant effort but was unable to change that pattern as Lazarus moved into the final with a 15minute 3-0 victory.
Lucy Soulby was the favourite to proceed to the final and was on track taking the first game. Neill had other plans though and took the game to Soulby in the second and quickly levelled the tie 1-1, after taking that game Neill never looked back and took her place in the final with a 3-1 win after 24 minutes.
In the final Lazarus started strong and took control moving quickly into a 5-0 lead, Neill battled well but was unable to get into any kind of stride. Lazarus was quick to come out in the second and keep the momentum going, racing to an 11-0 win in the second. Neill was unable to replicate the comeback she shown in the semi finals, Lazarus just too quick and accurate as she claimed her first National Title with a 3-0 victory.
The Boys event saw an unseeded player crash into the semi finals. Jack Mitterer (Kent) exploded onto the junior scene as he recorded wins against a 9/16 seed, a 5/8 seed and found himself in the semi finals facing the 2nd seed Jack Turvey (Hampshire). Turvey took the first two games and looked to be in control, Mitterer however did not want his giant killing run to end and came out fighting in the 3rd. His fight back continued into the fourth and fifth games and after 35 gruelling minutes Mitterer added the 2nd seed to the list of seeded players he had knocked out of this tournament as he moved into the final with a 3-2 victory.
Joining him in the final was another player who had played excellent squash to defeat a top seed. 3/4 seed Oscar Khoo (Middlesex) found himself against the number 1 seed Jared Carter (Hampshire) in his semi final. Khoo battled hard from the beginning and deserved his 2 game lead moving into the third, Carter fought back and took the third game but couldn’t keep it up as Khoo moved into the final with a 3-1 victory.
The Final saw Mitterer race into an early lead to take the first game 11-3, unfortunately he could not keep the pace up as Khoo fought back to level it 1-1 with an 11-2 win in the second. The third game saw Khoo settle into the game as he quickly moved into a 9-2 lead, Mitterer fought back but Khoo managed to hold on to take it 11-9. Khoo kept his momentum going and proved to be one seed too far for Mitterer, Khoo playing some classy squash in the 4th to win and deservedly take the National Title home.
