A Yorkshire Masters Double and One for Avon

Yorkshire got the Inter County Finals season off to a flier this weekend at Wolverhampton LTSC by claiming both the Men’s Over 60 & 65 titles whilst Avon finally defeated Middlesex to take the Over 50’s crown.

The Wolverhampton club were fantastic hosts and made all players and spectators extremely welcome before staging a hugely successful finals dinner on the Saturday night that was fully supported by all competing counties.

The inaugural Men’s Over 65 championship was contested by six counties playing group stages on Saturday and then finals and play offs on Sunday. The group stages were extremely exciting with both groups going right down to the final games. After defeating Lancashire, Yorkshire reached the final by narrowly overcoming Sussex 2-1. In the other group, both Surrey and Oxfordshire had one win to their name before meeting each other. Another tight affair ensued with Oxfordshire taking first blood before Surrey fought back gallantly to claim the match 2-1 and with it a place in the final.

The final was just as tight – Martin Day got Yorkshire off to the perfect start with a 3-0 victory over Paul Temple before Geoff Howes levelled it for Surrey with a fantastic 3-1 win over the World Over 70’s champion Adrian Wright. So it was down to Yorkshire’s Mike Clemson and Surrey’s Graham Whitehead to decide who would be first to get their county on the brand new Over 65 trophy. Whitehead was first to show his hand and built a healthy 6-0 lead in the first game before Clemson found his rhythm and eventually edged the game 10/9. That seemed to be the turning point and Clemson went on and eased to a 3-0 win and with it securing the title for Yorkshire.

The Men’s Over 60’ saw another Yorkshire Surrey final after both counties had won their semi’s with wins over Sussex and Lancashire respectively. Again the final was close but Yorkshire secured the double with Mark Thompson and Dave Manning taking the first two matches before Paul Garbutt claimed a consolation point for Surrey.

Middlesex arrived in Wolverhampton as the red hot favourites for the Over 50’s title but found themselves without two of their top five players due to unavoidable last minute pull outs. However their strength in depth was evident as they despatched Norfolk in the semi-finals 5-0. The other semi-final was a great tussle between Avon and Durham & Cleveland that Avon eventually took 3-2.

The final was a difficult one to call but Avon were determined to banish their memories of many losses to Middlesex over the years. Nick Drysdale gave Avon the perfect start with a 3-0 win over Brendon Mountner before Mark Regan fought back from 2-1 down to beat Mark Cowley 3-2 in a great 60 minute encounter. Middlesex’s hopes were then extinguished after a real seesaw affair saw Ben Dilleston finally defeat Stuart Hardy 3-2, securing the title for Avon. Middlesex were then left to play for honour and took the remaining two games to leave the final score 3-2 in Avon’s favour.

On the evidence of this weekend the Men’s Over 65 category definitely deserves its place on the Inter County schedule and should be able to build on this platform and attract further counties over the coming seasons.
