BRITISH UNDER 23 CHAMPIONSHIPS
23-25 April – Hunts County Squash Club, Cambridgeshire
The British Under 23 Championships is set to return to the prestigious Hunts County Squash Club in Cambridgeshire between 23 and 25 April 2010. The championship was re-launched last year as a joint venture between England Squash & Racketball, the British Squash Professionals Association (BSPA) and The Sports Academy at Hunts County Squash Club.
Last season saw Chris Simpson (Hampshire) fight back from a game down to Joel Hinds (Derbyshire) in the Men’s Final before running out a 3-1 winner to claim his fifth British title. The Women’s event was won by No1 seed Fiona Moverley (Yorkshire) who took out Welsh No1 Deon Saffery in a four game final.
With both reigning champions moving out of age new names are guaranteed on the Under 23 trophies. Joel Hinds (Derbyshire) is set to return with hopes of going one better than last year and take his first British title. Other contenders will include World No63 Adrian Waller (Hertfordshire) who is enjoying a fantastic run on the PSA tour and his long term rival Joe Lee (Surrey).
Victoria Lust (Bedfordshire) has also been progressing nicely on the international scene and is likely to start as hot favourite in the women’s draw. The World No51 should be joined by last year’s co semi-finalist Emma Chorley (Somerset).
This year’s event has a prize fund of £3450 and promises to build on the success of last year and further establish the championships as one of the country’s blue ribbon tournaments.
The Sports Academy is pleased to announce that The Huntingdon Marriott has joined us to sponsor the British U23 Squash Championships for 2010 and are offering excellent room rates during the event for competitors and officials. James Powley, of the Sports Academy said “I hope that this is the start of a great relationship between the Sports Academy and the British U23 Squash Championship at the Hunts County Squash Club, Hemingford Grey, Cambridgeshire.”
