Posted: 16.01.13

The 18th British Junior Open in Sheffield was a showcase for the Egyptians, with only Cheshire’s Emily Whitlock (GU19), Malaysia’s Eain Yow Ng (BU15) and Peru’s Diego Elias (BU17) prizing titles from Egypt’s grasp.

Abbeydale Park Racquets & Fitness Club, Hallamshire Tennis & Squash Club and Fulwood Sports Club welcomed 550 competitors from over 30 countries for the 2013 Tecnifibre British Junior Open.

The East Region was well represented with 24 juniors battling for honours.

The headline performers for the East all hailed from Essex. Elise Lazarus, the 2012 GU13 British Junior Closed champion, finished 5th in the GU13 category. Anna Kimberley, the England No.7, finished an impressive 10th in the GU19. Meanwhile Richie Fallows, the 2012 BU19 British Junior Closed runner up, finished 7th in the BU19.

In the BU13s, Suffolk produced the only two representatives for the East. 2012 East Region Closed BU13 champion, Billy Beecroft finished 22nd whilst his county compatriot, Josh Perkins finished 43rd.

Besides Elise Lazarus, two of the victorious GU13 East Region team from the 2012 Regional Team Championships competed in the GU13 event. Bonnie Butler and Katie Cox, both from Norfolk, finished 20th and 26th respectively. Suffolk’s Emma Bartley, a member of the GU11 East team, finished 31st.

The BU15s event had three East Region Academy players and it was very much a family affair. Bonnie’s brother, Milo Butler lead the way by finishing 30th whilst Billy’s brother, Angus Beecroft finished 51st. Hertfordshire’s Hasnaat Farooqi placed 55th in a high quality field.

The GU15s saw the most entries from the East. England No.2, Grace Gear from Hertfordshire finished 15th. Close on her heels was Suffolk’s Lucy Turmel who finished 20th. Essex’s Collette Whittington finished 32nd. Elsewhere Cambridgeshire had two representatives; Nadine El Refee who finished 35th and Emily Fuller who finished 39th.

In the BU17s, Suffolk’s Josh Turmel, 8th in the BU17 at the 2012 British Junior Closed, finished 32nd and Laurence Green, the 2012 East Region Closed BU15 champion, from Hertfordshire finished 49th.

Tayla Mounter, the 2012 GU17 East Region Closed runner up, placed highest in the GU17 finishing 46th. Hannah Mulvey of Hertfordshire finished 47th.

The U19 category for the East was dominated by Hertfordshire. In the Boys U19s Angus Gillams, 4th in the 2012 British Junior Closed, finished 12th. Joe Green finished 22nd and Harry Faulkner finished 38th. In the GU19s Brogan Lane, the East Region GU19 runner up, from Hertfordshire finished 32nd.

Congratulations to all the players that took part.
