English Under 11 Championships Day 1

Day one at the national squash centre and the boys were first on serving up a few upsets. Michael Mellor and Thomas Lane had an epic match which could have gone either way however Mellor managed to pip his opponent to the finish line winning 15-13 in the fourth to progressing into round 2. Undoubtedly the match of the morning saw Charlie Taylor, son of Nick, upset the 17/32 seed Alistair Little winning 11-9 in the fifth. Jamie Chalcraft managed the biggest scalp of round one knocking out 9/16 seed Matthew North in a tense affair that on a different day could have gone the other way. North won the first before Chalcraft won the next three 11-9, 12-10, 13-11 securing the match 3-1. William Ennis caused the final upset after beating 17/32 seed Jamie Baird, Ennis made the journey from Dorset a worthwhile one, winning 3-1 in 28 minutes.

The girls also had 4 upsets in round one the first coming from Rosie Kirsch who after losing the first game to Ella Hall regrouped to win the next three and book a spot in round two. Maddy Hill displayed real grit in her first match against 9/16 seed Olivia Besant, who also put in a determined effort, winning 11-13, 11-2, 12-10, 16-14. Marialena Iacovides put in superb effort to upset 9/16 seed Jasmine Tranter winning 3-0 in 14 minutes.

Round 2

Round 2 saw the introduction of the top seeds in the both draws all of whom were looking to make an impression in their first match. Last year’s fourth placed Jared Carter, wasted no time in his match taking 13minutes to win 11-0, 11-1, 11-0 against Daniel Neill. After a brutal 5 set match in the first round Charlie Taylor couldn’t maintain the same intensity as the much fresher Benjamin Sockett won 11-1, 11-0, 11-1. William Ennis carried on from where he left of as the unseeded player made it one step further into round three beating Jamie Chalcroft 3-1 in 30 minutes. In the other matches all of the seeds progressed to round three.
The biggest upset of the day came in the girls second round as Unseeded Olivia Taylor showed her first round match was no fluke as she knocked out 3/4 seed Elizabeth Wall, coming from behind to win 6-11, 11-8, 11-5, 11-1. Top seeds Eve Coxon and Torrie Malik showed their intent as both player progressed winning 3-0.

Boys Round 3

After a day of upsets the Boys draw continued in the same fashion with two more coming in the third round. The first seed to fall was 3/4 seed Simon Herbet who was beaten by Benjamin Sockett. A really close match which no player really deserved to lose was settled by the finest margin with Sockett clinching the 4th 12-10 to win the match 3-1. Dark horse Jack Mitterer provided the other upset by beating 5/8 seed Marcus Tranter. Tranter started strongly winning the first 5-11 only for Mitterer to come back and win the next three games 11-5, 11-3, 11-8. Top seeds Perry Malik and Jared Carter were both determined to ensure they would not fall to the same fate as both players progressed through to the quarter finals 3-0. Girls Quarter Finals

A huge round of upsets in the girls quarter finals as both the 1 & 2 seeds run in the tournament were brought to an end. No1 seed Even Coxon was taken all the way in her quarter final, 5/8 seed Keira Marshall held her nerve and came from 2-1 down to win 11-7 in the fifth securing her place in the semi-final. Lucinda Cross caused ripples with her convincing display against No2 Seed Torrie Malik. 5/8 seed Cross came through in straight sets winning 12-10, 11-4, 11-3 in 16 minutes. Olivia Taylor looks a real force to be reckoned with as she continues her winning streak the unseeded player making it to the semi-finals after beating 5/8 seed Evie Lawrence.
