The Leeds U3A racketball group celebrated it’s 1 year anniversary at Chapel Allerton Tennis, Gym & Squash Club by holding a timed tournament. There were 17 players with 12 players from Leeds, 3 from Bradford and 2 from the Ilkley U3A racketball groups.

They were divided into 3 leagues: Elite, Improver and Beginner. The Round Robin event consisted of 5 minute timed matches with 2 alternate serves and continuous points being scored. Every player had atleast 4 matches and the rest of the time was spent marking or watching matches.

The winners of each group were: Les Wood (Ilkley), Mary Bean (Bradford) & Margaret Quinton (Leeds). Everyone retired for refreshments to the bar and banter between the players was exchanged. For some this was their first tournament and Trish remarked ‘I am so glad that we didn’t play any longer than 5 minutes’. Rod who has only been playing for 2 months was pleased with his 3rd place in the Elite group said ‘it was fantastic to be tested by some good players’. Alex (runner up in the Improvers) said ‘next time it will be 4 weetabix for me, to make sure I have plenty of energy for all the matches’. Mary said that after playing in the Heaton tournament she learnt a lot, ‘you have to have the killer instinct and go for every point!’

The Leeds U3A racketball group meets every Friday 11-12 and with 10 players attending regularly, they are now looking to extend the session or set up another group on a different day.

All the players were reminded of the date of the next U3A Racketball tournament: 13 March at Ilkley ILTSC. Feedback was requested as to whether there should be an Elite Mens & Ladies group, with the Improver and Beginner categories remaining mixed. At this event it is expected that there will be more than 40 players playing from Bradford, Craven, Ilkley, Leeds, Ryedale & Sheffield U3A Racketball groups.
