Hertfordshire Junior County Closed 2012
The 2012 Hertfordshire Junior Closed was played at Radlett, Berkhamsted and Nuffield Squash Clubs in September.
It was another successful event with a total of 139 competitors in the junior (9-11) senior age groups (13-19).
Lucy Clayden proved to be the class of the field In the Girls U9. She sealed her dominance by beat Chloe Liebmann 11-1 in the final to claim the title.
In the Boys U9 event Max Liebmann prevailed against Adam Albright 11-2, 11-6.
The Girls U11 event saw the Girls U9 Champion, Lucy Clayden, beaten by Charlotte Weener 11-6, 11-7.
A close affair in the Boys U11 final went the way of David Maxen who beat TJ O’Sullivan 11-8, 10-12, 11-2.
In the Girls U13 event there were some very strong performances from rising stars Nyah Williams & Amber Marshall with the latter proving victorious.
Grace Gear has her eyes set on being Herts’ most successful female junior of all time after winning both the Girls U15 and the combined Girls U17/U19 event beating Amber Marshall and Hannah Daly respectively.
Special mention also goes out to Sarah Scofield & Katie Birt who put in excellent performances in both the U13 and U15 events. Notable absentees from this years event were Brogan Lane & Rose Luscombe both of whom had to withdraw prior to the event due to injury.
The Boys section was a story of brothers with the Greens, Gillams, Ledgers and Farooqi’s all in competition to see who could be the most successful family of 2012.
First out in the Boys U13 event were the Ledgers with both Jay and Owen looking in cracking form. Unfortunately for them so was Tommy Albright who came through to win what was a hard fought final against No.1 seed Jay Ledger.
Next out was the Farooqi’s and the Gillams in the Boys U15 event with Hasnaat Farooqi proving too strong for Hamish Gillams and taking the final 3-0. In the Boys U17’s Laurence Green was out to extend his run of County titles, which he did in style taking the final 3-0 against an improving Nicky Rossiter.
The Boys U19 event was a brutal affair with 3 of Englands top 10 players in contention for the title: Harry Faulkner, Joe Green & Angus Gillams. Hopes of a family double were dashed in the semis when Joe Green failed to get one over on Angus Gillams losing 1-3. In the other semi Laurence Green lost out to Harry Faulkner 3-0. The final was a bruising affair with the match see-sawing between the two players however after one and half hours play Angus Gillams finally managed to overcome Harry Faulkner taking the final 3-2 and adding to his previous titles in the U17 and U15 categories.
The Herts Squash Rackets Association would like to thank Radlett, Nuffield and Berkhamsted for their continued support of the County Closed events.
