Inaugural Beds Open a Success

On Saturday 10th November, Luton and Dunstable Squash Club showcased their refurbished home in the guise of the inaugural Beds Junior Open, an ESR Bronze Sanctioned Event.

Less than a year ago Luton and Dunstable Squash’s spiritual home in Lewsey, Luton was closed for refurbishment following a long and exhausting battle to simply retain the courts. The junior’s temporarily relocated to two rather cramped courts in Houghton Regis, so as not to lose momentum and few could have predicted what would be forthcoming.

The event attracted an astonishing 92 entrants from as far afield as Cumbria and Durham and competitions held at every age group except GU17. There was even some local success as the plate event was won in both the GU15 and BU15, by LDS members, Amy Rigby and Sam McCoy, a great achievement given that for most it was their first entry into the Open environment.

There was blood, sweat, tears and tantrums (and that was just from the volunteers!) but by close of play on Sunday, local dignitary and long-time supporter of the club, Lord McKenzie of Luton, declared before handing out the trophies and prizes, “The enthusiasm and athleticism of the participants was astonishing, it tired me out just watching!”

Active Luton (who run the Lewsey Sports Park where the competition was held) Chief Executive, Helen Barnett said of her visit, “Seeing so many young people participating in the event was superb, made even better by their obvious enjoyment and excitement. We’re delighted to be working with LDSC and look forward to many more events taking place at Lewsey sports Park.”

Steve Davies, tournament organiser, said, “The whole event has been delivered at the top end of our hopes and that is down to the volunteers, parents and youngsters. The quality of the squash was excellent. I would like to thank everyone who helped make this happen, especially sponsors Practical Car and Van Hire and Duncannon Executive Search. It was especially gratifying to hear seasoned “circuit” parents compliment us on our organisation”
