Over 100 students signed up for the ‘Try It’ Squash and Racketball sessions at the first Freshers fair held at the Headingley campus of Leeds Met University. The Big Hit promotional materials definitely helped to pull in the punters. According to Club Chairman Alex Hodgetts ‘we’ve done fantastically well and there’s another Fair at Civic Quarter tomorrow’. In addition the now annual Freshers free Racketathon, held at the Carnegie Regional Tennis centre, should also generate more interest in Squash & Racketball.
According to Rackets Development Officer Kirsty McPhee ‘with our completely free taster sessions we are ensuring that any student can have a go at any racket sport. Then if they want to take it up, we have the coaches to develop their playing skills. Overall we are giving students opportunities to get active and have some fun on court!’
The Try It sessions are planned for next week with Squash on Monday and Racketball on Tuesday. At these sessions students will be offered the £15 Big Hit offer. This consists of a series of 6 coached sessions, a years’ membership of ESR, a Big Hit T shirt & draw string bag and entry into a free prize draw.
In order to try and boost female participation there are established Ladies only sessions on Tuesday lunch times for beginners and improvers.
At Leeds Met there is a full Squash & Racketball recreational programme planned for the 1st & 2nd terms culminating in friendly competitions at the end of each Term.
