Teenage sensation Joe Green set Luton & Dunstable Squash Club (LDS) up for a fabulous result as they defeated Coolhurst Tennis & Squash Club 4-1 to reach the semi-final of the ESR National Club Championships.

Having despatched the legendary Edgbaston club in the previous round, LDS felt confident as they travelled to Coolhurst in North London on Saturday 23rd March. Few, however, would have predicted the outcome.

The evening was always going to be emotional with team-mate Harry Faulkner having been buried the day before. Club Chairman Paul Main kicked off the evening with a short speech in his honour before a bucket collection raised nearly £500 in his memory.

The tie got underway with LDS No.2 Adrian Waller taking on Ben Coleman. The match was full of attritional squash, with Waller able to come out on top 3-1.

Whilst this was going on, the No.4s took to the court. 18 year old Joe Green set the tone for the evening, comfortably defeating former World No. 80, Jago Nardelli 11-0, 11-1, 11-0 in 11 minutes, completing the match before the No. 2s had finished their game! The Coolhurst captain didn’t know what hit him! Green was equally perplexed and said afterwards, “I haven’t a clue how that happened. It’s a mystery”!

With LDS in a strong position at 2-0, they required just one further win from the remaining three matches to secure the tie.

The No.5s took to the court with LDS captain Steve Davies taking on Jack Fowler. Davies raced into a 2-0 lead before Fowler showed some mettle and clawed back the advantage. Unfortunately for Coolhurst, Davies managed to keep his cool at 9-7 in the 5th and closed out the game to deliver a historic win for LDS.

In what proved to be a pair of dead rubber matches, LDS No.1 Daryl Selby triumphed over Charles Sharpes, 3-1 whilst in the battle of the No.3s, Phil Nightingale managed to restore some pride for Coolhurst be defeating Marc Woolhead, 3-1.

The victory means that LDS qualify for the finals weekend 20/21st April at Hallamshire Tennis & Squash Club, Sheffield. The semi finals will be on Saturday 20th and the finals on Sunday 21st. An astonishing achievement in only the clubs second season in the competition.
