World champion Nick Matthew is to have a two-month break from the PSA Tour after winning gold and silver in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The 34-year-old Yorkshireman, whose wife Esme is expecting their first child soon, revealed in his column in today’s Sheffield Star that his next Tour event would be the U.S. Open starting on October 11.

He wrote: "I’ve not really had much time to soak all the Games in. Every now and then I drift off and remember what it was like, but, for me, the most important thing is to now have a bit of time off. I want to spend some time with the family. My wife Esme and I have got to organise one or two things before the baby comes.

“I’m going to have a little break, so my next tournament is not going to be until the U.S. Open in October. If my ranking drops because I miss a couple of tournaments, then so be it. It is unlikely I will be out of the top four, so I will come back and take it from there.”

Matthew, who retained his singles title in Glasgow five weeks after undergoing knee surgery and partnered Adrian Grant to doubles silver, is currently ranked second in the world.
