NEW SATELLITE CLUB FOR SQUASH IN YORKSHIRE
St Bede’s Catholic Grammar School in Bradford has linked up with Heaton Tennis & Squash Club so that its pupils can sample the delights of squash.
After-school sessions have been organised by the club’s head squash and racketball coach, Saeed Ahmad, on Mondays at 3.30pm.
The first session was well supported by boys from years seven and eight. They were introduced to the basic shots, given simple routines to follow and indulged in feeding and group activities. The session ended with some threequarter court games and volley winners.
Ahmad remarked afterwards: “The boys were rather excitable initially, but then calmed down and concentrated well to digest the information I gave them. With nine more sessions to go, I’m sure I will see a big improvement in their skills.”
Julian Higginson, St Bede’s head of PE, commented: “This partnership is great for the pupils, as not everyone is a team player, and to be given the opportunity to try and learn an individual sport like squash is a fantastic privilege.”
Chris Feelan, recently appointed as manager of Heaton Tennis & Squash Club, welcomed the partnership with St Bede’s and added: “The club hopes to be able to extend links to other schools in the area through the outreach work that is ongoing at the club thanks to the Dot Mainwaring Foundation.”
