South Regional Closed Championships 2012
The South Regional Closed Championships took place on 8th & 9th September at Aldershot Garrison Sports Centre.
All four counties were represented in the competition with 122 juniors taking part in over 170 matches on Aldershot’s fantastic six glass backed courts. The majority of age categories ran as a Monrad draw, meaning everyone had a final position.
Top seeds in the Boys U11 competition were upset by unseeded Hampshire boys Toby Ponting and Benedict Brandon. Ponting reached the Finals after beating No.1 seed Nikhil Vyas (Oxfordshire). Brandon’s journey to the Final was similar as he beat No.2 seed Teo Loeffen (Oxfordshire) in the semi-finals. After a closely fought Final, Ponting took the Boys U11 crown beating Brandon 11-5, 11-9.
Girls U11’s was run as a round robin competition to give the girls more matches. No.1 seed Olivia Besant (Hampshire) won all of her matches, only dropping one game to runner up Lucy Varco (Buckinghamshire).
Both No.1 seed Jared Carter (Hampshire) and No.2 seed Jack Turvey (Hampshire) stormed into the Boys U13 Final with neither of them dropping a game. Carter was just too strong for Turvey, taking the match and the title with an 11-7, 11-6, 11-5 win.
Girls U13’s was also run as a round robin competition. There were no surprises in this category, with all seeded players finishing in their respective ranks. Eve Coxon (Oxfordshire) took the title to add to her last year’s U11 title, Annabel Vaughan (Hampshire) was runner up, Brooke Williams (Hampshire) finished 3rd with Sian Meredith (Oxfordshire) finishing 4th.
There were no surprises in the Boys U15’s as both No.1 seed Kyle Finch (Hampshire) and No.2 seed Cameron Ward (Hampshire) reached the Final. Ward pushed Finch to five games, but Finch justified his top seeding winning the Boys U15 crown 6-11, 11-7, 9-11, 12-10, 11-5.
Girls U15’s was another No1. and No.2 seed Final. This was a closely fought Final with No.2 seed Jemma Stanton (Buckinghamshire) battling hard against No.1 seed Lucy Millington (Oxfordshire). Millington was the stronger player, winning 11-4, 10-12, 11-9, 11-9.
No.1 seed Alex Noakes (Oxfordshire) sailed through to the Boys U17 Final without dropping a game, where he faced No.3 seed Tom Kirby (Hampshire). As expected the No.1 seed prevailed, beating Kirby 12-10, 11-3, 11-5. Boys U17 saw a great achievement for Josh Carter (Hampshire) who was seeded 6th but placed a respectable 3rd.
No.2 seed Aisling Guerzoni (Buckinghamshire) upset No.1 seed Isabel Maloney (Buckinghamshire) in the Final, taking the Girls U17 crown. Maloney battled hard in a close fight, forcing Guerzoni to five games. But Guerzoni dug deep and took the title beating Maloney 3-11, 11-8, 11,-8, 10-12, 11-8.
There was another notable achievement in the Boys U19 category; with No.6 seed Cameron Kavanagh (Hampshire) beating No.3 seed Alastair King (Hampshire) and No.2 seed Jez Carter (Hampshire) to reach the Final where he faced No.1 seed Joe Brooke (Oxfordshire). Brooke had stormed into the Final without dropping a single game, like most of the top seeded players this weekend. Brooke beat Kavanagh 11-6, 11-0, 11-4 retaining his U19’s crown from last year.
Similar to the Girls U17 Final, No.2 seed upset No.1 seed in the Girls U19 Final after another very close match. This proved to be a very exciting match, with No.2 seed Lydia Hume (Hampshire) beating off No.1 seed Natalie Machin (Buckinghamshire) 7-11, 11-6, 11-0, 11-6 to take the crown.
Overall the weekend was a great success with some fantastic squash being played. Well done to all who entered!
