Super Sunday at Sedgefield Squash Club
In a historic sporting year Sedgefield Squash Club has made its own sporting history by holding it’s first ever exhibition and coaching sessions featuring World ranked number 1, James Willstrop on Sunday 30th September.
The sell out event gave the club members and friends the opportunity to watch and or play on court, against the world’s best player. The crowd were treated to a breath taking display of athleticism and shot play as James took on various club members for 5 minute spells. He gave the opportunity, from the youngest (13) to the oldest (75) members, to play on court against him, along with many team players, who all gained from his knowledge. The spectators were amazed as to how quickly he was able to get to the ball, despite Sedgefield members best efforts, and all learned much from watching his movement and positioning. However club veteran, Ken Turner, was able to teach James a trick or 2, by beating him in 2 consecutive rallies with a cheeky drop shot from James’s serve.
The evening on court concluded with 4 exhibition matches against men’s No 1 seed Stephen Rowsby, Club Champion Robert Pearce, and 2 top level county players, Josh Harris and Chris Gillespie. The spectators gained a certain amount of satisfaction from seeing the club’s best players being given the run around for once!
At the end of the evening James held a question and answer session with the audience at Ceddesfeld Hall. There he gave some great insights on keeping fit, training, and the bid to make squash an Olympic Sport in 2020 along with photo opportunities and the chance to buy a signed copy of his first book ‘Shot and a Ghost’.
A fantastic evening was had by all attending, many thanks to James and those from the Club involved in organising the event.
